Shockwave Therapy – Is it for you?

We’ve been using shockwave therapy for around 2 years now and are still impressed with result that this gets with tendinopathies, various muscle issues and plantar fasciitis. If you’ve have one of these you know how stubborn they can be to deal with. Shockwave therapy is a device used for tissue healing, fast pain relief and mobility restoration. Typically we see marked changes in around 5 sessions.

So how does it work? The shockwave device produces an acoustic pressure wave that penetrates into the tissue of the injured area. This causes the injury to undergo neovascularization, differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells and local release of angiogenetic factors. Or in plain english it increases blow flow to the area and stimulates new healthy tissue to grow. It also decreases inflammation in the area. This mean less pain and new healthy tissue. Another benefit is that the intensity of the treatment can be adjusted to minimise any extra discomfort to an already sore area.

A session will typically last anywhere from 5 minutes to 15 minutes depending on the size of the treatment area. Which area usually performed 1 to 2 times per week over a 3-6 week period.

The results we’ve seen so far and the feedback we’ve had from patients has been great. If you’d like more information to see if we might be able to help you get in touch with us.

Dealing with foot pain

One of the key takeaways from @sydneysportspodiatry inservice on dealing with foot pain is that most people with foot pain need to stretch their calves daily.

The second takeaway is that most people don’t stretch their calves correctly.

So here’s the how to guide.

Keep your foot flat on the ground with your heel pushed into the ground.
Keep your hips and shoulders square to the wall.
Keep the arch of your foot up.
Your knee can be bent or straight pointing straight ahead.
Keep you back flat. Hold for 30-60 seconds

Repeat this everyday and let us know how you go!

What is the difference between Chiropractors and Physiotherapists?

We are often asked in clinic: “what’s the difference between Chiropractors and Physiotherapists”?

Injuries happen and it can be very confusing when you are in pain and wondering if a chiro or a physio would be the best person to see for some treatment.

We hope to shed some light on what it is exactly these professionals do to make your decision in choosing a practitioner that is right for you a little easier.

The short answer is it depends on the practitioner you see! Historically Chiro has focused on skeletal function where physio focused on muscular groups. Today evidence based medicine and the fact that we all tend to read the same research means that there is a lot of overlap between how both physiotherapists and chiropractors practice.

Chiro

Chiropractic has come along way in recent years, A lot of our patients are surprised we treat muscle, ligament and tendon problems not just joint and spinal complaints! We used a combination of this hands on therapy with take home exercises to get the best results for our clients helping them meet their goals. Our long 30 minute treatment sessions are tailored to our clients, using a combination safe and effective methods in every session:

  • chiropractic adjustments
  • soft tissue releases / massage
  • shock wave therapy
  • dry needling
  • rehabilitation / corrective exercises / strength plans

We have fund that this combination of treatment modalities will have patients out of pain fast and keep them there.

Physio

The Australian physiotherapy association define physiotherapists as “professionals who work in partnership with their patients to help people get better and stay well.”  Phyio’s will often use a combination of treatment methods such as:

  • rehabilitation / corrective exercises / strength plans
  • Massage
  • dry needling

Treatment times vary and often there is a greater focus on having the patient moving with exercise and less time with hands on care however this again depends on the practitioner.

Sports training with pain

At North Shore Chiropractic clinic  “Am I ok sports training with this pain?” is one of the most common questions we get asked.
So here’s a simple rule of thumb. Use the TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM. Once you’ve got a diagnosis and ruled out any nasties:

✅ 1-3 out 10 discomfort is a green light. Go for it!

?4-6 out of 10 discomfort is an orange light. You’re not stopping yet but your paying attention. If pain starts increasing then it’s time to skip this exercise. Most of the time we find as the exercise goes on the pain actually decreases.

? 7 out of 10 discomfort or higher is red a light. Stop training with pain. You’re not ready for this yet. But keep working to build back up to this!

If these problems persist make an appointment with one of our experiences practitioners at North Shore Chiropractic team in Pymble here.
